Trump Admin Keeps Deportation Shield In Place For Thousands Of Foreigners

The Trump administration shielded more than 100,000 foreigners from Ukraine and Sudan living in the United States after their protections were set to expire.

Immigrants from Ukraine and Sudan were set to lose their Temporary Protected Status (TPS) on Monday before the federal government stepped in, allowing them to continue to live and work in the United States without the fear of removal, according to CBS News.

The Biden administration granted TPS to Ukrainian nationals in 2022 in response to the war between Russia and Ukraine. More than 100,000 Ukrainians were enrolled in the program as of March 2025, according to federal data.

TPS for Sudanese nationals has been in place since 1997 and has received multiple extensions since then. As of March 2025, nearly 1,800 Sudanese immigrants had TPS protections.

DHS also stepped in last month to keep TPS protections in place for Ukrainians and Sudanese after they were set to expire, according to CBS.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said it has yet to make a final decision on how to proceed with the programs long-term and will do so “at the appropriate time,” according to CBS.

Until then, Ukrainian and Sudanese immigrants who have TPS will “retain protections,” DHS said.

The Trump administration has canceled TPS for more than one million immigrants from more than a dozen countries, including Haiti, Venezuela, Syria, and Afghanistan.

Earlier this year, the Trump administration delayed a final decision to terminate TPS for immigrants from El Salvador, allowing them to stay in the country for now until an official announcement is made, according to CNN.

In June, the Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to end TPS for Haitian and Syrian immigrants. Following the decision, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) began prioritizing the arrests of Haitian nationals

The Trump administration also launched regular deportation flights to Haiti while instructing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to place ankle monitors on Haitian migrants who cannot be immediately removed from the country.
