At Oscars, Irish Actress Praises Marriage and Motherhood| National Catholic Register
The actress stole the night with her poignant words to her husband and her 8-month-old baby girl.
In yet another star-studded affair, hundreds of Hollywood elite gathered last night for the 2026 Academy Awards. But Tinseltown today is buzzing about a beautiful speech given by young Irish actress Jessie Buckley, who won Best Actress for her role in Hamnet, a movie that reimagines the life of William Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes Hathaway.
Buckley spent her acceptance speech sharing the wonderful fruits of marriage and motherhood, saying, “I would like to dedicate this to the beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart.”
Beautiful.

She first zeroed in on her husband:
“You… Fred, I love you, man,” as the crowd laughed.
“You’re the most incredible dad. You’re my best friend and I want to have 20,000 more babies with you,” as hundreds in the audience cheered.
“And Isla, my little girl who is 8 months, who has absolutely no idea what’s going on and is probably dreaming of milk, but this is kind of a big deal, and I love you and I love being your mom, and I can’t wait to discover life beside you.”
Speaking to her costars in the audience, Buckley continued talking about her role in the film, playing Shakespeare’s wife and the grief they both endured with the death of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet, from the plague.
“To get to know this incandescent woman and journey to understand the capacity of a mother’s love is the greatest collision of my life.”
Noting that the U.K. celebrated Mother’s Day yesterday, the young actress said, “So I would like to dedicate this to the beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart.”
Several Catholics and pro-life voices reacted to the heartwarming speech on the true gift of motherhood, including Lila Rose of Live Action, who wrote, “Marriage isn’t a trap. Babies aren’t burdens. Motherhood is a gift.”
Kristan Hawkins of Students for Life took to social media, writing, “With the Left so intertwined with Hollywood, it was refreshing to hear something different at the Oscars.” She added, “Being a mother and having a family isn’t oppression — it’s a gift!”
Caitlin Huey-Burns, CBS political correspondent and proud mother of two, also was moved by the speech, writing on X: “To me, Jessie Buckley’s line of ‘I can’t wait to discover life beside you’ is the essence of motherhood. It’s the most profound and beautiful thing I have experienced as a mom — the way in which everyday life becomes full of little discoveries.”
EWTN’s own Raymond Arroyo of The World Over also threw in his two cents, calling it the “best Oscar speech of the night,” writing on social media: “Jessie Buckley praises marriage and motherhood as she won for best actress. Committed love, children, and family is all we have when this ride is over. And it is more important than even an Oscar.”
In an industry that often treats family life as a hurdle to career success, Buckley’s speech served as a poignant counter-narrative. By celebrating the “beautiful chaos” of the home alongside the prestige of the Academy, she reminded Hollywood — and the world — that the most enduring roles are often the ones played off-screen.
